In Defense of Humanity

By: Bikal Dhungel

Defining poverty and the situation of the poor will never be enough, but what this article is trying to highlight is the waste of talents these billions of people have because their talents will never get a chance to be discovered. People are born with talents, some discover it throughout their life, some do not. People also have Passion. There is no person in the world who has no passion for any thing. Passion is what leads to creativity which then bring talents and talent in turn has got immense power for creation or value. Aspirin, Electric Motor, pocket watch, television, were all born out of passion, talent and creativity of individuals. Almost all of the modern day invention took place in developed countries. Why and how did this happen ? Because developed countries created an environment of creative discoveries by education ? By giving people a reward in terms of profit? By ensuring the property rights ? By supporting these individuals financially ? Well, Yes. As a result, the whole society profits from creativity. Developing countries on the other hand are not being able to extract the knowledge from the minds of their citizen due to mismanagement, bad policy and other societal and economical restriction. It does not mean that people in developing countries are stupid. They are not. People with poor country origin have achieved some valuable achievements being in rich countries. They have transplanted a dead man's heart, they have built a large steel giant, they have invented, discovered and also contributed.

Unfortunately, they are only few lucky ones who got the opportunity but billions of people could not. Who knows that there is a treatment of HIV in the mind of a boy who is now mal-nourished and struggling to survive, who knows if a poor child can build a helicopter that flies without fuel, who know if there is treatment for Alzheimer, for any other disease where no treatment is available, who knows if a little girl has an idea of building a house in the air, totally earthquake proof, who knows how better and worth living this world would be if everybody had a chance to make full use of their talents. With the lack of this opportunity, we would have missed Mozart on the way, we would have missed Wright Brothers invention of Airplane, we would have missed Dr Thomas Salk and his Polio Vaccine which would have caused millions of death, we would have missed Dr Normal Borlaug and the Green Revolution that 'saved billions'. We would have missed number of other things that makes our life worth living today. So, if opportunity can be extended, it will better our life even further. People say, you are a dreamer if you say this. People say, ' we cant afford this '. In fact, you might be a dreamer but we can afford this, indeed. The world does not have an income problem, the world has spending problem. That means, it does not spend its money intelligently. If only we count the security spending of the whole world, it is possible to provide every person with enough food, provide every levels of education and full health care services. We build machines to destroy others, we spend on things that harm us more than it does good. It is mathematically possible to prove the above arguments. Our life and life of every person as well as animals would improve if only we cared and spent intelligently.

They say we cannot afford to give everybody a chance. I say, we cannot not afford to do this. We have to see the opportunity cost of untapping the talents. We need more dreamers, we need more inventors, we need more creative minds to solve the problems humanity is facing. Give chance to everybody. Without a chance, without support, we would have missed Steve Jobs, Ralph Lauren, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, for all Chelsea fans Roman Abrahmovitz and Harry Potter readers, JK Rowling. They were once poor but the society they lived in gave them hope and power to grow better, this was combined with their passion and hard work and finally a value was created which we all adore today.
